Palmierii fac parte din grupa plantelor cu flori. Sunt plante monocotiledonate adica embrionul are o singura frunza. In lume sunt peste 2500 specii de palmieri care pot fi arbori, arbusti si chiar plante cataratoare.
O caracteristica al acestui grup de plante este ca nu au ramuri ( putine sunt exceptiile) frunzele dezvoltandu-se din capatul trunchiului. Din aceasta cauza daca se reteaza capatul superior al trunchiului planta moare.
Palmieri sunt in general plante tropicale insa exista intre 50 si 100 de specii care pot rezista la temperaturi de sub -7 grade Celsius si cateva care rezista chiar la temperaturi de sub -18 grade Celsius
